Kin Phea, director-general of the International Relations Institute at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said TAC is important to countries outside of Asean.
It is a regional treaty that has so far been signed by many countries, including the world’s Super Powers. Asean initiated this treaty to maintain peace in the region and forge alliances with other countries. TAC was established in 1976 and embodies universal principles of peaceful coexistence and friendly cooperation among States in Southeast Asia. It is a legally-binding code for inter-state relations in the region and beyond. To date, 49 countries have acceded to the TAC.
