Multilateralism is necessary for easing geopolitical tension

Kin Phea, director-general of the International Relations Institute at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said Asean is a regional organisation with multilateral members that require them to work together on regional issues as well as global issues.

Asean needs to formulate clear policies through Asean summits and Asean plus meetings with superpowers and take that opportunity to show neutrality, and independence and not be under the authority of any superpower.

“Asean countries cannot ignore either one or the other of the two superpowers; participation of both is needed, but it all depends on which country benefits the most from which superpower,” Phea said.
