Balancing act: Cambodia to adopt constructive dialogue during Asean summits

Kin Phea, director-general at the Royal Academy of Cambodia’s International Relations Institute, said yesterday that there are several issues that will possibly be discussed which may cause tension during the summits.

He said those issues are the Russia-Ukrainian War, the South China Sea dispute, Taiwan Strait Tensions, the North Korea nuclear programme and the Myanmar crisis.

“Non-traditional (common) security issues such as climate change, global warming, natural disasters, food and energy crises are all core issues that Asean is focusing on will also be discussed,” he added.

He said the Myanmar crisis is considered both an Asean and regional issue that needs to be resolved.

“There seems to be divisions in the world such as the superpower stance on the Myanmar issues by the United States and its Western allies on one hand, and on the other hand, China and Russia which stand by not condemning Myanmar’s military leaders,” he said.
